NYC Fashion Week: Spring Trends

People who wish to follow the New York fashion week trends will party like it's 1989 next spring. Among the surprising silhouettes that harked back to the days of Amazonian supermodels and power suits were: white linen pants with tapered legs, Bermuda shorts and bicycle shorts. Looks like it's time to dig out the shoulder pads and motorcycle jackets again.

Karl Breaks out En Masse

Kaiser Karl's clothing will soon be accessible for even the skimpiest of budgets. Monsieur Lagerfeld celebrated his collection for H&M in Paris last week with a huge party at Restaurant Georges at the Pompidou center. (Nothing low-budget about that.) Expect the chic jersey skirts, narrow-sleeved jackets and tuxedo shirts to fly out of the 500 designated stores that will carry the collection in November.

Raging Campbell Uberalles

Naomi Campbell was working hard during New York fashion week, walking for everyone from Heatherette to Tommy Hilfiger. The buzz around the tents was that the volatile vixen was up to her old tricks, by terrorizing virtually everybody backstage from other models (saying mean things and generally scaring them) designers (refusing to wear designated outfits) and security guards (threatening to get them fired). Isn't it ironic that she just happens to be the model with the longest career ever.

Sari is for Stars

Every fashion week needs a new star, and for spring 2005 Sari Gueron seems to be the leading contender to become rookie of the season. Miss Gueron had a room full of flushed female editors in a tizzy over her gorgeous and simple draped silk and chiffon gowns. You'll be sure to see more of them on every well-dressed starlet from Scarlett Johansson to Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Runway Bride to Be

The sweetest moment ever of NYC fashion week occurred on the runway of the Alice Roi show. At the presentation's finale, the models turned into messengers of love as Roi's boyfriend sent them out carrying cards that read "Will you marry me?". Judging from Roi's exuberant response, we'll assume the answer is yes.

Christensen Acts Out

Helena Christensen continues lead a busy post-supermodeldom life. The Danish beauty has already made a name for herself as a talented fashion and portrait photographer, but now rumor has it that she is getting ready to take that dreaded leap into acting. Supposedly, Christensen will star in a new Scandinavian film about a pianist's return to his native Copenhagen. However, making a debut film in Denmark seems like a smart choice. If the movie bombs it will only be seen by a handful of people.

LVMH Busts Bootleg Bags

New Yorkers who have planned to incorporate a knock off Fendi or Louis Vuitton bag into their wardrobe should dash down to Canal street immediately. Last week, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton scored a victory against 29 Chinatown retailers selling counterfeit goods as a federal judge ordered each company to pay $16 million in statutory damages. Which means LVMH could see a total award of $464 million. That would surely take care of some of the conglomerate's debt.

An American in Paris Vogue

Expect to see a lot of Marc Jacobs and Juergen Teller in Paris Vogue in time for Christmas. Sofia Coppola will be guest editing the December/January issue of the magazine, which has a tradition of having celebrities oversee its holiday edition. The Oscar-winning director takes over from Catherine Deneuve who had the honors last year. If we're really lucky, we might get to see a fashion spread with father Francis as Santa Clause and Scarlett Johansson as his little helper.
